After a career at sea and ashore in the Merchant Navy, Martin obtained a part time degree followed by a PhD in Modern History, and began an academic career 20 years ago, strongly focused on mature and Foundation students. Martin's teaching includes the development, writing and delivery of core and complementary modules for the Faculty's Foundation Year. In History, Martin teaches regularly at all levels and supervises final year dissertations on a variety of topics, but especially those involving the experience of war. Martin has written two books ' The Jewish Legion and the First World War' and 'The Royal Marines and the War at Sea 1939-45', and frequently delivers public talks on a wide range of historical topics.
